Agreements for Body Transportation

Guidance for Persons Responsible for Contacting Transporters

After the medical examiner has assumed jurisdiction of a decedent, you may contact any firm appearing on our list of authorized transporters to move a body. Those transporters indicated as Available should be contacted first. Several are available in most counties, allowing you to secure the best, most responsive transportation service available in your area. Please note that Reserve transporters are available on a limited basis and may not be generally available.

Authorized Transporters

In order to be eligible for reimbursement by the state, a transporter must enter into a written agreement with the state. All firms on this list have entered into such an agreement.

Interested in Becoming an Authorized Transporter?

If a transporter is interested in becoming an authorized medical examiner transporter, please send an email to ocme.transporterrequest@dhhs.nc.gov to request becoming an authorized transporter. If you DO NOT have your permit/license to remove and transport decedents, please go to the NC Board of Funeral Service website (https://ncbfs.org/transportation-licensure/) read their requirements, complete the application and pay their fees (https://ncbfs.org/wp-content/uploads/forms/individual/Transporter-Application.pdf)

Firms Not Listed

Some funeral homes that have an agreement with the state are not listed at their request. Please be aware that if you contact a firm that does not appear on this list, they may or may not be eligible for reimbursement by the state.

If you have a question as to whether they are eligible or if you know of a firm that wishes to provide services, please contact the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
